Biography

Between 1988 and 1994, Heger worked first as editorial assistant, next as assistant editor and then as managing editor of Communication World, published by the nonprofit International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), headquartered in San Francisco. He was also IABC'S manager of desktop publishing. After that, he worked as a communication coordinator for the HMO Kaiser Permanente in Northern California.

Administration, media relations and fundraising were key to jobs he held for Contra Costa Nuclear Weapon Freeze, Northern California Freeze Voter 84 Political Action Committee, Ground Zero, Public Interest Research Group in Michigan and Greenpeace Great Lakes.  He has also worked as a self-employed gardener, a medical coder at a children's hospital and a medical records technician at a residential psychiatric hospital and a county jail.

 

Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Michigan, was where Heger had his first jobs, working as a tutor in the Writing Workshop, assistant to a consultant evaluating the accessibility of the college to students with disabilities and as assistant to the director of the Special Needs Office.

 

Heger has a bachelor of arts degree in journalism from San Francisco State University, an associates degree in science from Chabot College in Hayward, California and a certificate in landscape gardening from Merritt College in Oakland, California.

He lives in Albany, California, with his wife and one of his three sons.
